❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How does speech recognition work?
The app uses your browser's built-in speech recognition technology. It listens to your speech and compares it to the expected text, providing feedback on accuracy and pronunciation. The app automatically switches between online (cloud-based) and offline (on-device) recognition depending on your connection.
Can I use speech recognition in different languages?
Yes! The app supports English (US), Portuguese (Brazil), French, Spanish, and Italian. Change your language preference from the Help (?) icon. Your selection is saved and applies to all practice sessions.
How do I use bookmarks?
Tap the bookmark icon (📑) next to the line progress indicator to mark important lines. Use the "← Prev" and "Next →" buttons to navigate between bookmarks. Bookmarks are saved separately for each script set and persist across sessions.
Is my data private and secure?
Yes! All your data is stored locally on your device. We don't collect, store, or transmit your personal information or audio recordings. Everything stays on your device.
Can I use the app offline?
Yes! Once installed as a PWA, the app works offline. You can access your personal library and practice scripts. However, speech recognition is only available offline if your browser supports it. Chrome and Edge on desktop typically provide offline speech recognition, while other browsers may require an internet connection for speech features.
What's the difference between free and premium?
Free users can access the public library and create up to 3 personal script sets. Premium users get unlimited personal sets and My Words speech customization for better recognition accuracy.
The app isn't recognizing my speech properly
Ensure you're in a quiet environment, speak clearly, and check your microphone permissions. Premium users can use My Words to train the system for better recognition.
How do I update the app?
If installed as a PWA, updates happen automatically when you're online. You'll see a notification when an update is available. Click "Refresh" to get the latest version.
What accessibility features are available?
LockedPillar includes extensive accessibility features: OpenDyslexic and other dyslexia-friendly fonts, adjustable font sizes (12-32px), line and letter spacing controls, 8 color presets including high contrast modes, WCAG-compliant contrast checker, text-to-speech (Listen Mode) with customizable voice and playback controls, focus mode, line highlighting, keyboard shortcuts (Alt+A to open settings), and reduce motion options. All settings persist across sessions.
How do I access accessibility settings?
Click the ♿ Accessibility button in the library toolbar or press Alt+A. You'll find four tabs: Reading (fonts and spacing), Visual (color schemes), Display (layout options), and Audio (text-to-speech settings). All changes are shown in real-time preview before saving.
How does text-to-speech (Listen Mode) work?
Listen Mode is available only in "Read Lines" practice mode. Toggle "Listen Mode" to switch from speech recognition to text-to-speech. The app will read lines aloud to you with playback controls (Play, Pause, Stop). You can customize voice, speed (0.5x-2.0x), pitch, and volume in the Audio tab of accessibility settings. Smart navigation automatically plays the next line when you advance, perfect for auditory learning and accessibility.
Can I use custom colors for better readability?
Yes! Choose the "Custom" preset in the Visual tab to select your own text and background colors. The app automatically calculates the contrast ratio and shows if it meets WCAG AA (4.5:1) or AAA (7:1) standards for accessibility compliance.
